8 Simple Rules Regarding MRI

* MRI exam times vary but generally it will last between 30 and 60 minutes
* Remaining still throughout the exam is extremely important especially for periods of 3-10 minutes while the series of images are collected. Ask your doctor for pain medication if you anticipate a problem holding still
* MRI exams cause no pain and exposure to radiation is avoided. A warm sensation may be sensed in the area under examination; this is normal
* Approximately 1 in 20 patients require medication to reduce the anxiety associated with claustrophobia
* Filling out and signing the patient checklist accurately and completely prior to a MRI exam is extremely important
* Repetitive knocking sounds are common throughout the imaging session. Music can be requested by the patient
* A MRI technologist will communicate with the patient throughout the session. The patient can communicate with the technologist at any time
* Written results from the MRI exam will be available to your physician within 24-48 hours
